Chat is where most businesses are with AI. The next step is an assistant that carries out a task end to end rather than answering one question at a time. Microsoft calls these agents, builds them in Copilot Studio, and they are further along than most people expect — with caveats that matter.
What an agent is
A Copilot configured for a specific job, with access to specific data and, optionally, the ability to take actions: look up a record, create a ticket, send a message, update a list. Think "a new colleague with a narrow job description and no ability to improvise outside it".
Examples that work today
- Policy and procedure assistant. Point an agent at your SharePoint handbook, HR policies and IT procedures. Staff ask "how do I book leave?" or "what is the expense limit?" in Teams and get the answer with the source. Cuts the questions that land on office managers.
- Onboarding helper. New starter asks it anything in week one.
- Customer-facing FAQ on a website, answering from approved documents only.
- Request triage. Reads incoming requests to a shared mailbox, categorises them, drafts a first reply for a person to approve, and logs them.
The guardrails
- Scope the knowledge. An agent should read only the documents it needs. Everything about permissions and labels applies doubly here.
- Keep a human on the send button for anything that reaches a customer or changes a record — at least until the agent has earned trust with a log to prove it.
- Log everything. Who asked, what it answered, what it did.
- Start with answering, not acting. An agent that reads and answers is low-risk; one that acts needs a review.
Where we fit
Building an agent is a few days' work. Building one safely — right data, right permissions, right approvals, monitored afterwards — is the part that needs the same care as any other system in the business. We deliver agents on the environment we already manage, with the security and support that already surround it, which is the only way we are comfortable putting one in front of a customer's staff.
